Golden Hour Magic: A Playful Evening with a Family of Four on Short Beach

There is something completely magical about summer evenings on the coast of Massachusetts, especially when you get to spend them capturing a lively, fun-loving family. As a North Shore family photographer, I am lucky to have some of New England’s most beautiful coastlines right in my backyard.


For this session, we headed to one of my absolute favorite hidden gems on the peninsula: Short Beach in Nahant.

Embracing the Energy: Candid Beach Photos


When you are planning beach photos with two young girls, you quickly learn that the best strategy is to throw the rigid posing script out the window and just let them play. From the moment their feet hit the sand, these two sisters were bursting with energy and pure excitement.


Instead of forcing stiff, perfectly behaved poses, we turned the session into an adventure. We ran along the shoreline, hunted for perfect seashells, and let the girls challenge their parents to a race against the tide.


As a Nahant family photographer, my goal is always to capture the authentic spirit of your family. The pure joy, the wind-whipped hair, and the genuine belly laughs always make for the best memories. Because the girls were so active and excited, we walked away with an incredible collection of playful and candid photos that truly show their personalities.

Three Tips for Playful, Stress-Free Family Beach Photos


If you are planning your own family session on the North Shore, here are a few ways to keep the energy high and the stress low:

  • Let Kids Be Kids: Let them run, jump, and get their toes wet. The best shots happen when children are completely engaged in play, forgetting the camera is even there.
  • Timing is Everything: We schedule beach sessions during "golden hour" (just before sunset). Not only is the light soft and flattering, but the beach is usually much quieter, giving your family plenty of room to explore.
  • Dress for Movement: Flowy dresses, comfortable layers, and bare feet work best. If you're worried about keeping clothes perfectly clean, you'll miss out on the fun!
